Healthy Kids Nutrition
Healthy Nutrition for kids has an obvious value. The better the fuel we put into them the happier and healthier we hope they will be.
Healthy nutrition is not only important to our physical well being. Research reveals more every day about the effects healthy nutrition has on brain development and behavior of some children. With this knowledge the healthy choices we make now for our kids can have long term and in some cases serious consequences for their future well being.
- Breakfast - Breakfast is the most important meal of the day. A good breakfast contains carbohydrates e.g. porridge with some protein e.g. milk.
- Lunch - Lunch will include some protein e.g. eggs or chicken.
- Evening meal - Carbohydrates like pasta or rice are good at supper time as they will help your child fill full until breakfast the next morning.
- Snacks - Snacks for kids should be as nutritious as possible, encourage them to eat fruit or vegetables. Sugary snacks on okay as a treat occasionally. Encourage your child to drink plenty of liquids, especially water rather than sugary drinks.
Most healthy eating guidelines for adults recommend a low fat and high fibre diet, this is not suitable for young children. Young children, less than 3 years old, need fat for energy, too much fibre will not be good for their immature digestive system.
However, a healthy family lifestyle will encourage children of all ages to eat more healthily. By the time your children have reached the age of five you can be feeding them the same as the rest of the family. Try to encourage them to enjoy vegetables and fruit, and for healthy eating to be something your children see as being fun.
